---------

The Story: It's kind of an interesting story how I came into this Whisky. I was visitng my long time friend, the Edinburgh Cigar Smoker last week for a few days while doing seminars and events throughout Scotland. He told me he wanted to take me to the "smallest distillery in Scotland" and not one for turning down an adventure through the Highlands, I agreed. We jumped on the train from Edinburgh for the 2 hour journey to Pitlochry. We had a great time on the train catching up about everything since we haven't seen each other in over a year, conversations of cigars, coffee, and of course Whisky.

After arriving in Piltochry we grabbed a few quick things and began our hike to the distillery..now full disclosure you can take a car and drive to the distillery but the Edinburgh Cigar Smoker wanted to hike through the Highlands on tight trails to show me a few of the natural beauties Piltochry had to offer (and thank you to him for making me take the hike!). It was beyond beautiful, after the 45 minute adventure seeing historic buildings, water falls, farm houses, hills, we came to the final walk through a tight trail that ran against someones farm with a stunning view of the rolling hills, it was truly something to behold. But the funniest part was coming out of the woods and right onto the distillery property and getting all the weird looks from people who drove as we are covered in pollen, vegetation, and all.

The Distillery: Marketed as the "smallest distillery in Scotland" it was quite the quaint distillery, with a combination of white and red on each building. We took the tour, and seeing their operation in full operation, it was great to see a boutique distillery. To put things in perspective, what Edradour makes in a year is what the largest distilleries make in a week...but love and care goes into their product and it shows on the property. A great place to visit with a wide variety of offerings in their tasting room and their cask warehouse was certainly beautiful!

Whisky Tasting Notes: In an effort to keep this light and short a bullet list of our flavor notes are below...

Nose:

  • Lemon
  • Yeast
  • Honey
  • Caramel

Tasting:

  • Honey
  • Short Bread
  • Light Fruit
  • Nutmeg (on the finish)
  • Crisp

Conclusion: One thing that stood out to me with this pairing was how well the honey and crispness of the Edradour 10yr paired well with the nuttiness and white pepper of the La Hacienda Gran Robusto. If you have smoked La Hacienda Gran Robusto you know the profile offers a lot of nuttiness, sweetness, and a bit of light pepper and having that sweet honey, fresh crispness of the whisky helps enhance the experience of La Hacienda Gran Robusto.

If Edradour 10yr is readily available to you, give it a shot with La Hacienda Gran Robusto! The Whisky is very good, so adding a bottle to the collection will not hurt!

See you next week!

Blend Validation - The Process

POSTED BY Kyle G / Wed, Nov 09, 16

If you follow us on Instagram then you have probably seen some of our social posts and a process known as "validation". This process is more known as blend validation, where we check the consistency of the blend for a certain maraca and vitola. Below we will showcase and explain to you our process of blend validation as it related to La Hacienda Superiores.

Please remember that each manufacturer is different in their validation and the process goes much further in depth then shown, but this will give you a good base of exactly what is going on during the Warped validation process.

What are we looking for?

Today we will be validating La Hacienda Superiores, the 5 5/8 x 46 Nicaraguan puro compromised of 100% AGANORSA Corojo '99 and Criollo '98. So what exactly are we looking for? What you see in front of you are 3 Superiores (and 1 in my other hand, so a total of 4). Each cigar is from a different pair from the same production run that just entered our warehouse. We are validating these cigars from different pairs to ensure that the blend experience is the same from pair to pair and run to run. We also have a reference point from past runs that we keep on hand to compare against.

la-hacienda-Superiores-validation

What do you use to keep your palate clean between cigars?

This is often a VERY personal thing, but in my experience I have heard the following...

  • Flat water
  • Espresso/coffee
  • Mineral water
  • Dark chocolate
  • Butter cookies
  • Milk
  • Alkaline water

For me, it is the below...

  • Espresso (usually pre first cigar)
  • Mineral water
  • Dark chocolate
  • Biscoff cookies

During the validation process, mineral water is used during the entire process, dark chocolate is used between 1/3's and the cookies...well sometimes you gotta get your snack on.

Let's Start:

We have officially started the validation process, with the inaugural lighting of the first cigar.

What Happens Now?

We will now begin smoking the first 1/3 of sample 1 and begin taking a series of notes in regards to the experience. Initial combustion, first draw, you know the typical aspects you look for in your cigar experience. We document each of these factors for not only the current validation but notes to apply against future validations as well.

So we are now a 1/3 of the way into our sample 1 of La Hacienda Superiores, what is next?

Now we will light another sample rolled by a different pair part of the same production run. This will allow us to make sure that the blend consistency and placement is the same experience as sample 1...

Okay, I lied...sometimes I go for espresso whenever it's in front of me.

Our newest team member Scott is to my left and I am explaining Warped's validation process as I am explaining it to you. As you can see sample 1 and 2 are lit and being smoked side by side for comparison. Notes are taken of sample 2 and compared against that of sample 1.

This process will continue for sample 3 and 4 and will be compared against sample 1 and 2.

The process continues.

Do you need an opinion?

To us its imperative that the blend is experienced the same whether by me or anyone on the Warped team. Their sample may be different then mine and we need to taste that to see if something is wrong. Often times we will cut the end and trade samples to ensure that everything is proper between my sample and theirs.

This is accomplished simply by taking a pair of scissors and cutting the mouth end. This is often done during the blending process as well. We all know the blend, and we all need to be in agreement over its consistency.

All in all validation from start to finish took around 2.5 hours. The below photo summarizes the end of our very quick example of blend validation.

We hope that this give you a little bit of education on the aspect of blend validation. We do this on a regular basis to ensure blend consistency across all of our brands and vitolas. Thank you for your suppprt!

Cuban Cortadito - The How To

POSTED BY Kyle G / Fri, May 06, 16

Welcome back! And welcome to the next installment in the "How To" series of Cuban coffee drinks. Once again, as you can probably guess with spending so much time in Little Havana and around Cuban's in Miami and even down in Nicaragua, the team is consisted of 95% Cubans and their traditions come with them...coffee included.

So what is a "cortadito"? A cortadito is "essentially" a mini café con leche which is spanish for "coffee with milk"). This is designed to be sipped and enjoyed rather then the Café Cubano which is meant to be taken in shots.

In our last article, we learned how to make Café Cubano, and those skills will come in handy for the Cortadito. If you are not familiar with how to make a Café Cubano, please take a few minutes and review the article as it is a large part of crafting this delicious concoction.

Now that you have refreshed your memory, lets begin!

First we start by pouring that delicious Café Cubano into our glass. We typically fill to 1/4 to 1/3 of the glass depending on how strong you like your drink.

warped-cuban-coffee

Now that the glasses are full here is what you will need for the next step. Your milk (we use whole) and your pitcher. We like to keep our pitcher cold so we put it in the refrigerator for an hour or so before using...why? Who knows, we kind of do things different here.

warped-cortadito

Pour your desired amount of milk into the pitcher (this is based on how many Cortaditos you plan on making and their size).

warped-cortadito-milk

Now lets get some milk steaming going on!

warped-cortadito-milk-steam

Now that your are done steaming its time to grab those glasses with the Café Cubano in them and add your steamed milk.

warped-cortadito-add-milk

After adding your steamed milk, pick it up and enjoy!

warped-cortadito-pick-up

Now go give this a shot at home, its super easy and is extremely enjoyable anytime of the day.

Sky Flower: 2016

POSTED BY Kyle G / Wed, Feb 17, 16

sky-flower-flor-del-valle-header

As we have mentioned previously, The Return of Sky Flower is the end of March 2016. So we have been getting some questions in regards to Sky Flower and its release, so we thought to take a few minutes and answer these questions for you so you can better prepare for The Return.

Background on Sky Flower:

Sky Flower is a extremely limited production variation of Flor del Valle utilizing the rare ligero priming known as medio tiempo. You may have heard of this material before as it is used in the Cohiba Behike and has become known for the incredibly unique flavor and aroma it gives. Medio Tiempo does not grow on all tobacco plants as its a random occurrence offshoot of the ligero priming.

These are small leaves and have to be picked out of the ligero harvest with tweezers (no, we are not kidding), its difficult to process and requires immense time and experience to properly process.

Sky Flower utilizes 100% Aganorsa leaf and is a Nicaraguan puro.

What is the box count?

Sky Flower is available in 10ct boxes only.

What size is Sky Flower?

5 5/8 x 48

How does it differ in flavor profile from Flor del Valle?

We get asked this quite a lot, and we always try to explain it, but you have to smoke it to understand.

Will you post up a list of retailers that are getting Sky Flower?

Yes, we will. But if you want first access to the list, you can subscribe to the Sky Flower email list below and get the information before we publish it on the website.

2015 Recap and What to Expect in 2016

POSTED BY Kyle G / Mon, Jan 04, 16

How time really does FLY! Here were are in the very beginnings of 2016 and we are super excited to move into this amazing year. But before we hit the pedal to the floor and take off into 2016, lets take a look back at 2015.

Releases:

We had a few marca releases this year, and here is a quick sum up of all of them.

Don Reynaldo Regalos: The original Don Reynaldo was released in December of 2014 to honor my dad and his support and introudction into the cigar world. The blend was based on his preference while I was growing up, he loves Habanos, so I vowed to blend something taking into consideration his two favorite marcas. Regalos, was released at the IPCPR in New Orleans and was a very successful blend. I was super excited to see it take off the way it did and so was "Reyanldo" as I showed him everything from launch until now and will continue to.

La Hacienda: "The Estate" is the 100% Aganorsa Nicaraguan puro that was a first for us, a price range of $7.50-$7.95 and available in 2 vitolas. This incredibly popular offering from Warped was conceptualized over dinner in NYC. The dish we were eating had 0 appeal in reading it as you never would figure the flavors would work together...well slap me I was wrong. Over dinner I said that I had to attempt to recreate this profile in a blend, and on my next trip to Nicaragua, La Hacienda was born.

Futuro: Ah Futuro, one of the most talked about new marca releases from Warped in 2015. A collaboration between myself and Max Fernandez of TABSA/Aganorsa, this project was a very organic method of coming to life and took over a year before it was completed. Having access to TABSA/Aganorsa's vault tobacco (material reserved for the family only), Max and I started to work on this project and wanted to achieve a blend that was different than anything Warped and Casa Fernandez has done up to this point. Available in 2 vitolas based off mine and Max's personal preference and it's just a blend you have to seek out and try...you will see why.

Recap: I will keep it short and sweet. We had a great year and we couldn't have done it without our amazing family of retailers around the country and YOU! Thank you for making this year so amazing and I am humbled to see all of you enjoying the brand with the #warpedcigars hashtag! Keep those images coming, I love seeing everyone Get Warped!

Haven't tried any of these blends? Find the nearest Warped retailer to you and give them a try!

2016: What to Expect

So the questions of what Warped has planned for 2016 began at the 2015 IPCPR in New Orleans and now the 2016 IPCPR in Las Vegas is only about 7 months away, so lets get to it. The first thing everyone wants to know is "WHAT'S NEW?"...

I only have one (1) new release that will be available to all Warped retailers this year. It will debut at the IPCPR in Las Vegas in July.

I will spend this year concentrating on the quality and consistency of all of our lines to make sure your experience with Warped is the best it can possibly be.

Café Cubano or "Cuban Coffee" - The How To

POSTED BY Kyle G / Tue, Oct 06, 15

I have had the pleasure of tasting amazing coffee all over this country and abroad while traveling for Warped, but nothing compares a Café Cubano made down in Little Havana. Across the street from El Titan de Bronze on the corner of 8th & 11th is a walk up window that produces the best Café Cubano I have ever had. This amazing mixture of espresso and sugar is addicting and keeps you going for those long days in the factory while blending and checking production.

Each and every trip I make down to El Titan de Bronze, one of my first acts is to go across the street to this walk up window and get a Café Colada which is served with 4-6 plastic demi "shot" cups. The purposes of these plastic demi shot cups is to serve your friends/co workers with this amazing elixir. It's a common custom down in Miami, and whether it is the rollers at the factory or visiting friends to the factory, you are always offered a shot.

After enough trips down to Miami and not being able to find anything near close enough to this where our headquarters are located, I took it upon myself to master this craft. Well lets distill this down as quickly as possible...making Café Cubano is not easy... to get it right, it took me 1.5 years (yes, 1.5 years, I am not joking) to get it to the point where the team at HQ said it was 97% to what we get in Little Havana. You always see photos on Instagram of the coffee, so let me show you how I make it.

The recipe below will produce 4-6 shots of Café Cubano.

Here we go!

What you will need:

cuban coffee

Espresso machine

Ground espresso of your choice (Pilon for us as of right now)

Sugar

2 pitchers

Spoon

Plastic demi shot glasses (you will be sharing this, remember that!)

Espresso tamp

Step 1: Fill your portafilter with coffee and give a light tamp (if you're using a pressurized portafilter), if you have a non pressurized you will need your normal amount of force for tamping.

cuban coffee portafilter

Step 2: This is probably your most important aspect! Measurement of sugar...too much will make it way to sweet and too little will provide you with a lightly sugared espresso. I use 1.5 spoons of Domino sugar. To be more detailed, 1 rounded full spoon and then a straight half spoonful. Put your sugar into (1) of your (2) pitchers.

cuban coffee sugar

Step 3: Okay lets brew some Pilon. So with your empty pitcher, brew about 1/4-1/3 of the pitcher with a full portafilter. If you brew longer and more, they espresso becomes way too bitter (this is one of the things I learned the hard way). If you start seeing foam build up in your pitcher, dump it out, and try again. With a pressurized portafilter you're looking at 10-12 seconds of brew time before shutting the brew off.

cuban coffee brewing

Step 4: Ah...another very important aspect of Café Cubano that separates it from the rest. Instead of just totally dumping your espresso into the pitcher with the sugar, you pour a very tiny amount into the sugar pitcher. This is extremely important for the next step.

cuban coffee sugar coffee mix

Step 5: With your spoon you will begin mixing together the sugar and small amount of espresso until it becomes a thick delicious paste of straight sugar and coffee. If you are mixing and you do not have a paste, take your spoon and lightly add some additional coffee to create the consistency of paste...yes I'm serious.

cuban coffee paste

Step 6: Don't worry, we are almost there! So now the rest here is simple. After you have created your paste mixture (as seen above), you will pour the remaining coffee into your sugar paste pitcher.

cuban coffee sugar cofee pour

Step 7: Once you have poured all of your coffee into the paste pitcher, start mixing to melt that paste. This will create the signature 'crema' or thick topping Café Cubano is known for.

cuban coffee final mixture

Step 8: Start pouring for friends

Step 9: Look at that, you are all done!

Step 10: Now enjoy! And sorry that I have forever ruined your preference on coffee.

IPCPR 2015

POSTED BY Kyle G / Tue, May 26, 15

Ahhh...we are less than 2 months from the 2015 IPCPR that will be hosted in New Orleans, LA! A time to release new product, speak with your family of retailers about their shops, customers, and about the future...good times! But we keep getting asked what will we have to release at this years show? So I thought I would give a little insight into this questions that I keep getting asked from retailers, customers, and bloggers.

At this years IPCPR we will be releasing (3) new marcas, and while (2) of those marcas are already known, (1) is still a mystery.

Don Reynaldo - We released Don Reynaldo originally in Dec 2014 as a marca to honor my dad for all he has taught me about cigars and the support he has given to me and the brand over the years. The release was 100 total boxes in a 5.5 x 42 made at El Titan de Bronze in Little Havana, FL and was a big hit amongst our retailers and customers around the US. After speaking in length to my dad about how the blend was received he said that everyone should be able to enjoy it more frequently and so it was decided to re-release the blend at the IPCPR this year. We will only be releasing (1) size of this blend and the size will be released opening day at the IPCPR, we will not let it out before then. Available in 10ct boxes and once again made at El Titan de Bronze in Little Havana, Miami!

Futuro - Or "Future" is a collaboration between Warped x Casa Fernandez, but more specifically Kyle Gellis of Warped and Max Fernandez of Casa Fernandez, son of Eduardo Fernandez, owner of AGANORSA and Casa Fernandez. We originally began speaking about this project at the 2014 IPCPR and it took that much time to develop this concept and blend. We set out to create a profile that is unlike anything Warped or Casa Fernandez has done previously, utilziing 100% AGANORSA material from their "vault" a selection of tobacco under lock and key and specifically for the Fernandez family. (2) vitolas will be offered, a 5 5/8 x 46 corona gorda and a 6 x 52 109 and will be available in boxes of 20. Made at the TABSA factory in Esteli, Nicaragua.

TBA - The last release will be announced at a later date...just hold tight!

A Peak into the Future

POSTED BY Kyle G / Wed, May 13, 15

While the IPCPR is approaching in just a little over two months, we also have to work beyond the show! This is a small peak into what the future will hold, and we cannot wait to see these blossom.

Warped x Casa Fernandez Collaboration - "Futuro"

POSTED BY Kyle G / Fri, May 08, 15

Warped and Casa Fernandez are proud to announce a collaboration for 2015! Futuro, will officially debut at the IPCPR trade show in New Orleans on July 18th.

Futuro started as an idea at the 2014 IPCPR in Las Vegas between Kyle Gellis of Warped and Max Fernandez, son of Eduardo Fernandez of AGANORSA. The idea behind Futuro was simple but overly complicated, create a flavor profile and experience like nothing Warped nor Casa Fernandez has done previously.

Utilizing AGANORSA’s material from their “vault”, a section of their storage facility under lock and key and home to their most prized material, life was given to this AGANORSA puro.

Wrapper: Nicaraguan Corojo ‘99

Filler: Nicaraguan Criollo ’98 and Corojo ‘99

Binder: Nicaraguan Criollo ‘98

Body: Medium – Full

Futuro will be offered in 2 vitolas in SLB’s of 20. The selected sizes and shapes were individually chosen by Kyle and Max to reflect their own preferences while blending Futuro.

KG - Selección Suprema – 5 5/8 x 46 – MSRP - $8.75

MF - Selección 109 – 6 x 52 – MSRP - $9.75

Only 400 boxes of each vitola will be available for the debut at the IPCPR in New Orleans.

POSTED BY Kyle G / Mon, Jan 12, 15

We live off coffee, it's a daily part of our life here at Warped. We have it in the morning, we have it in the afternoon, and we have it of course while smoking cigars! It's long been a desire of ours to come out with a specialty coffee and work with a roaster that represents the same ideology that we have at Warped, and we have done just that.

We are proud to announce that we are working with Relentless Roasters based out of Miami, Florida to bring you a truly unique coffee experience. Ruthless has a unique system going on, which we love, from start to finish, its a single family...yes you heard me. The coffee is grown on their family owned farms in Nicaragua (oh did we mention it was Nicaraguan? No..well get ready for a Nicaraguan coffee like no other!), harvested, dried, and then roasted in Miami all by the family. This allows immensely special process allows us to bring you a very unique coffee that you cannot find anywhere else.

Limited to only 100 8oz bags!

Variety: Pacamara

Altitude: 1,550 MASL (meters above sea level)

Processing: Naturally dried on African drying beds

Flavor Notes: Explosion of fruit, from strawberry tart, mango, banana, and cherry.

2015 is Here

POSTED BY Kyle G / Sun, Jan 04, 15

Well 2015 is upon us and we have already started the new year on an amazing foot. But we have been asked repeatedly what are we going to be doing for 2015?? We love keeping our supporters informed about whats going on, but in all honesty we cannot always divulge everything...

So sit back, enjoy the year, and we will keep you informed about everything along the way!

But as a sneak peak, we do have something new coming from Nicaragua...

2014 is Done

POSTED BY Kyle G / Wed, Dec 31, 14

Well its the last day of 2014 and we are at HQ, doing the typical year end stuff. But we are also thinking back on all that 2014 has been for the Warped and the team members. Its been quite a hectic year, so here are some of our favorite memorable moments!

Moving into our new Headquarters:

Find a spot to call home was intense, stressful, and a drawn out process (but hey what real estate deal isn't?). We spent months looking for a place to call home and luckily when we saw a property that was shown to us at the last minute, I called the rest of my team down to immediately see it and we got the process done very quickly. It's funny thinking back now being at the end of the year from the time we moved in, there was nothing, a completely empty warehouse and office space to what it is now. Its home now and we cannot wait to make it more like home in 2015...can we say coffee bar?

The IPCPR:

Ohh the IPCPR...if you are exhibiting, you know what I am talking about! From the months of preparation to flying out with my team, to the days of no sleep, its quite an intense experience (we were in Las Vegas for 6 days, and if you have been to Vegas you know this is WAY to long). Meeting with all of the retailers from across the world, it was an amazing experience, one that we loved each and every minute of. Thankfully plenty of espresso kept us going! We cannot wait to see everyone in New Orleans in 2015!

Shipping El Oso, La Colmena, Flor Del Valle, and Don Reynaldo:

This was probably our team list topper. From some box delays to the time they finally went out, we were beyond excited to finally get these marcas out to shops, so YOU could finally enjoy them. Hearing the responses from you has been unreal to us and we are humbled that Warped has found its way into your humidor! Your support and love of these marcas keeps us driving forward to continue to provide you with an experience like no other and we look forward to your support in 2015 as we launch some amazing new things!

So from ALL of us at Warped, we want to THANK YOU for your support this year!

Have a happy and safe New Years!

See you all in 2015!

Warped Wristwear

POSTED BY Kyle G / Sun, Dec 14, 14

Ahh the holidays are among us and things are booming here at Warped. We are busy surviving this holiday rush and also planning for some BIG things in 2015. We have a few new marcas set to release in 2015, clothing, and much more. But we have been receiving a ton of inquiries regarding our signature wristwear! So I wanted to take a few minutes to discuss this with everyone.

We get a lot of inquiries about when the wristwear will come back in stock, and when it does, we send out an email letting everyone know its back in stock, and as quick as it comes in, it goes out to their new excited owner! One of our goals of 2015 is to accommodate everyone's desire with these pieces and we are working hard to do just that!

We are proud to say that we will be expanding the wristwear line in 2015 in full production! Leo's Wisdom and I have been in the studio coming up with some incredible designs that will set a new level for Warped and Leo's Wisdom.

Stay tuned, its going to be exciting!
